Academic Enrichment Fund: Call for Submissions

Overview

Seattle Children’s has created the Academic Enrichment Fund to support the scholarship and research of faculty who devote the majority of their effort to clinical service and medical education. The fund's annual budget of $500,000 will be administered by Chief Academic Officer Dr. Bruder Stapleton based on recommendations from the Academic Enrichment Fund Committee. The Committee, comprised of seven Children’s clinicians from varied hospital divisions, along with Dr. Stapleton, formulated the eligibility criteria, the application and review processes, and will review and rank the applications.

The fund is established to support a wide range of activities, including hypothesis-driven investigations, educational programs, research related to patient safety or medical administration, establishment and implementation of registries, etc.

Awards

Funds will be distributed as non-renewable intramural grants that must be utilized within two years. Requests will be accepted for up to $25,000 per individual applicant and up to $50,000 for projects that involve multiple eligible investigators from different divisions or departments. Funds may be used for a wide range of activities including, but not limited to, support research staff, research clinical tests, data managers, small equipment, etc. Use of these funds to support the salary of the faculty members is not permitted. See examples of past awarded projects.

Eligibility

All of the following criteria must be met by the principal investigator AND any co-investigators to be eligible for an award:

  • Hold an academic appointment (including "Acting" appointments) at the University of Washington.
  • >= 60% of effort is clinical service at Children’s or a Children’s satellite.
  • No current intramural or extramural research support, with the exception of new faculty who had research support in their prior position, but were unable to transfer funds when they relocated to Children’s.

Note: The funds are not intended to support the research of established funded investigators. However, an individual who does not meet one or more of these criteria may serve as project "mentor", provided the roles of the mentor and principal investigator and the independent nature of the principal investigator's project are clearly delineated in a supporting letter to accompany the application.

Funding Cycle

There will not be a call for applications of new grants awarded in 2009 through September 2010. A call for applications will be posted after October 2010 based on available funding.

Review Process

Applications will be reviewed and ranked by the Academic Enrichment Fund Committee.

Prioritization will be based on a project's:

  • Likelihood of enhancing our knowledge of disease, clinical practice or educational mission
  • Having a well-defined outcome or product (such as, but not limited to, a publication)
  • Feasibility within a justified budget
  • Likelihood of promoting the applicant's and/or hospital's academic status

Preference will be given to collaborative projects involving multiple divisions.

Applications will not be reviewed unless they are complete and adhere to the eligibility requirements specified above.
